Expanding on a long tradition of bringing music into the schools, Washington Performing Arts Society announces the Capitol Jazz Project, a unique partnership with the D.C. Public Schools to support the study of music through jazz instruction and student performance in the schools. Carol Bogash, Director of Education for Washington Performing Arts Society and creator of the Capitol Jazz Project, is passionate in her belief that “music is a necessity for the development of every child. The Capitol Jazz Project helps to support the DCPS’ efforts towards this goal

The Capitol Jazz Project comes at a particularly opportune moment in time, when new music standards for the District of Columbia that comply with national standards are about to be introduced. Until now, DCPS had no mandatory music standards. Adapted from the Virginia Standards of Learning, the new D.C. standards were developed cooperatively by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, DCPS Director of Music Ben Hall, and teachers and administrators working with community organizations such as WPAS.
