"The dancers were really cool…My favorite part was when you got some people to dance up with you guys. You shouldn't change it one bit!"

Founded in 1965, Concerts In Schools is an arts exposure program that provides free interdisciplinary arts performances for the whole school to enjoy. Set within a lecture/demonstration or workshop format, Concerts In Schools events are conducted by one of more than 30 local artist groups who have extensive experience in bringing their art form to schools. Artist groups integrate their artistic disciplines with other curricular areas, creating educational and interactive experiences for students. Each participating school is entitled to at least one back-to-back performance by the artist group (length may vary). Specific age levels can be catered to during these performances. In the 2003-2004 school year, more than 275 schools received 466 performances, bringing the performing arts to approximately 97,000 students.

The program reaches Title I schools in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, Maryland, and Fairfax County, Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia. In the District of Columbia, WPAS has partnered with the D.C. Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative since 2001 to provide Concerts In Schools events to D.C. Public and Charter Schools.

Every Concerts In Schools event is connected to the National Curriculum Standards and includes a Performance Guide and Poster sent to each school in the weeks preceding the event. Select Performance Guides and Posters are available (PDF format) for download.

For information regarding how your school can receive a free performance through the Concerts In Schools program, contact WPAS at (202) 833-9800 or info@wpas.org
