Children of the Gospel Summer Workshop
participant, 8th grade. (2003)
In July 2003, Washington Performing Arts Society hosted the Inaugural Music Academy, which was composed of the weeklong Children of the Gospel Vocal Workshop. Students of ages 9 to 18 participated in sessions focusing on vocal training, choral studies, music theory, choreography, songwriting, soloist clinics, and sectionals. Guest instructors Dr. Ysaye Barnwell (Sweet Honey In The Rock) and Dr. Walter Turnbull (Director, Boys Choir of Harlem) presented workshops and prepared the students for two performances held for the community.
The 2004 Summer Music Academy featured the 8th Annual Children of the Gospel Vocal Workshop at Shiloh Baptist Church. The workshop, on July 19-23, 2004, focused on clarifying personal values and vocal development. Due to the generosity of individual donors from WPAS’ 2004 Gala, all students attending the Academy receive full scholarships for their participation. The Academy itself is made possible through generous support from Kaiser Permanente.
Planning for the 2005 Summer Music Academy is already underway. Dates and venue will be announced in February 2005. Please check back for more information and registration procedures.
Future plans for the Academy include adult workshops in basic and intermediate music theory, workshops for music directors and musicians, and expanding to other disciplines.

Gospel Music Programming
This music genre originated in African American churches and continues to inspire many. WPAS began its Gospel Concert Series during the 1998/1999 season as a new programming initiative aimed at reaching new audiences while elevating the visibility and awareness of gospel music.
