Featuring Young Artists Representing:

  1. The Capitol Jazz Ensemble (A partnership between Washington Performing Arts Society and DCPS in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center). Featuring music students representing the participating DC schools – Deal MS Roger Jackson, teacher, Hardy MS, Yusef Chisholm, teacher, Hart MS Ovetta Lewis, teacher and Ron Brown MS Janice Evans, teacher with WPAS teaching artists Jazz Update, Jeff Antoniuk, Director.
  2. WPAS’ Children of the Gospel Choir, Stanley Thurston, Artistic Director, Brandon Felder, Guest Director, Diedre Neal, Choreographer, with the WPAS Gospel Band and also featuring Thomas G. Pullen School Youth Chamber Orchestra
  3. WPAS’ Summer Steps with Step Afrika! Youth Ensemble, Giani Clarkson , Youth Ensemble Director, C. Brian Williams, Exec. Director, Step Afrika!

Program Description:

As part of the WPAS’ Summer Performing Arts Academy, these 3 programs especially highlight the African American traditions of jazz and gospel music, and step dancing while providing expect instruction in instrumental music, voice and dance techniques. Each participant builds tools in leadership and team building; sharpen their analytical skills and concentration; discipline, confidence, as well as experience the joy of live performance. Camps that are included in WPAS Summer Performing Arts Academy are tuition free programs.
