Juilliard-trained four-time Tony Award–winning and two-time Grammy Award-winning American singer and actress Audra McDonald has appeared on the stage in both musicals and dramas, such as Ragtime and A Raisin in the Sun. Ms. McDonald maintains an active concert and recording career, performing song cycles and operas as well as performing in concert throughout the US. On television, McDonald has performed in numerous PBS specials and starred in Mister Sterling on NBC and Private Practice on ABC. In 2001, she was nominated for an Emmy for her performance in Wit—the HBO film of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play directed by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson. Born into a musical family, McDonald has been profiled by 60 Minutes and The Today Show. |
Proceeds from the Season Opening Celebration support our artistic programming and educational community outreach programs. For more than 40 years, WPAS has enriched the lives of nearly 4 million children and adults with programs such as Concerts in Schools, the Summer Performing Arts Academy, The Capitol Jazz Project, Embassy Adoption Program, the Men, Women and Children of the Gospel Choir of the Gospel Choir, the In-School Artist Residency Program, and the Feder Memorial String Competition. In 2010 alone, we served more than 100,000 youth and adults with this broad spectrum of activities to encourage creativity, talent, and appreciation for the arts.
